About Elena

She is a graphic designer currently based in Rotterdam, NL studying at Willem de Kooning Academy.

In her projects she likes to combine photography/illustrations with text — they vary from print, editorial, motion, digital, web design and more.

She enjoys learning new techniques, therefore you’ll usually see her working towards creating something different than before.

Her work is often research based and inspired by different experiences — observation of art and designs, music, nature, people and exposure to different places in the world.

Cat Got Your (Mother) Tongue?

Cross-Media publication consisting of an interactive essay reader website and a second medium — the zine. Having the book "Shadowbook" by Miriam Rasch as the source of inspiration for this project and "How Languages Die" by Salikoko S. Mufwene as the content essay, this Cross-Media publication was designed.

With the use of skeuomorphism, the goal was to give my audience the feeling of experiencing a website "made in the 90s". The reason being that, just how each era slowly fades — languages do too — and it's always up to the people whether it will or not.

As for the font choices, they were inspired by the content of "Shadowbook" — there is contrast between the elegant and informal just like the text in the book. The font Garamon(d/t) by Paul Tubert is derived from the classic Garamond font which he “scanned and smashed”. Therefore, it’s a combination of formal and informal. SyneMono has a formal character to it and Crédible is a graffiti font chosen to be used because a lot of the times graffiti communicates a political message, since the chosen text has a political nature.
